Time’s up for Tux
I’m a bit slow on this, but I just now confirmed that Tux Magazine is belly up and no longer publishing a monthly magazine.
I’ve been a subscriber to the magazine since the first few issues. Every month I would get my release notification and I’d download a copy. Then last month I realized that December 2006 was the last issue. The web page had old stories reposted in current posts, but I couldn’t find any news on the web site. A service question went unanswered.
Silence usually only has bad things to say in these situations. After 30 seconds with Google, I found the answer. From Tux’s publisher:
I am sorry to inform our readers that Issue 20 of TUX was the last monthly PDF produced. While we have received an amazing amount of positive feedback about the magazine, the financial reality of the situation made it impossible for us to continue publishing TUX. Current revenues didn’t cover current costs, much less allow us to expand the publication as we wished.
For those that had a paid subscription, you have been sent email with your options.
Thanks for your support.

My subscription wasn’t yet paid, but they could have at least sent me an email too. Tux started out as a free subscription magazine, and a few months before they shut down they switched to a paid subscription. I remember thinking bad things were about to happen, but I didn’t realize the downward spiral was so quick.
I’ve been a Linux users for years, but I enjoy(ed) reading the desktop coverage. I’ll miss Tux. I wonder who will publish the next new user friendly open source magazine? I know this writer…
